Free Will, yea or na?

Q & A

Q. When Adam fell in sin, did it completely destroy God’s image and likeness in us including that of free will?

A. The doctrine of Free Will is a misnomer! It is a man-made theological construct that is a distortion of the biblical truth.  Although created in the image of God with the capacity to choose, we are NOT independent agents with a free will. I am not saying that we do not have the ability to choose or that we are robots. Our capacity to choose is a fundamental facet of our being made in God’s image. See chapter 6 – “Creatures of Choice” in The New You.

To be sure God made us in His image, as creatures of choice. We are all born in Adam (our founding father) under the dominion of Satan. Therefore, the God of this world ruled our lives. “Ye are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father ye will do.” (John 8:44) Yet, by the grace of God, we were granted the amazing privilege of choosing life, in order that we might live (Deuteronomy 30:19–20). And the choice is yours! You can either chose to obey God or disobey God. But let us be clear your choice is singular: so chose life!

God is a loving Heavenly Father who wants us to have LIFE, His Life, which is the abundant life (John 10:10).  But even after we receive Christ we are still not our own: we have only changed masters, moving from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of God.  As new creations in Christ, we have a new master, The Lord Jesus Christ. “Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you have been bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body.”  (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) To attempt to exercise your so-called free will is to act contrary to the Lordship of Christ and the leadership of the Holy Spirit.  And that is called rebellion or disobedience, which will quench the Spirit every time. So, there is no such thing as doing your own thing.  You are either doing God’s thing or Satan’s thing.  The question is: which master are you serving?  Dr. Lewis Gregory
