What’s so good about this particular Friday? Friday is the day that Jesus Christ died upon the cross, so this Friday is the only truly “Good Friday”.

The Good Lord gave His good and perfect life for sinful humanity by willingly going to the cross to die. His was no ordinary death. The death of Jesus Christ was the supreme sacrifice for all mankind! Through Christ’s death God’s mercy was manifested and His love was validated. Good Friday commemorates the day when the goodness of God was poured out on our behalf.

Good Friday also marks the end of an era! The old is out and the new is in. As a result of Christ’s death, we can now have freedom from bondage, the bondage as slaves of the devil. We also have the opportunity to start all over again with a clean slate as sons and daughters of the living God. Good Friday is “independence day” for all humanity!

“O My God!!!” Such was the piercing cry from the lips of the suffering Son of God at the height of His agony upon the cross of Calvary. “And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46) This was a reference back to Psalm 22:1-2, which gives us an insight into the heart cry of our Lord. “My God, my God, why have You forsaken me? Far from my deliverance are the words of my groaning. O my God, I cry by day, but You do not answer; And by night, but I have no rest.” This certainly does not sound good, and it most definitely did not feel good to our Lord.

That first Good Friday was the origin of OMG . . . but with passion—the passion of THE CHRIST upon THE CROSS. Jesus Christ cried out amidst the agony of Calvary, “Oh my God, my God.” With that agonizing cry Christ was expressing the ultimate agony that brought forth the ultimate glory. He made it possible for God to become your God too. And not just your God, but your Father as well! After the resurrection Jesus told Mary, “I go to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God” (John 20:17). Now that’s amazing grace!

God’s amazing grace is also available to you. Upon receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, God becomes your Father too. You’re family now; you’re part of God’s Heavenly family. And you have a loving Heavenly Father to show for it! Therefore, you too can now say to Him, “Oh my God, my Lord and my God!” OMG . . . OML! OMG—not merely the exclamatory remark of a phone text—but the ultimate expression of amazement, adoration and exultation of your great and mighty God. OML—Oh My Lord—even better. Jesus Christ is my Lord and my God. Thank you Lord!!!

“Oh my God, my Lord and my God!” Say it, sing it, shout it! Good Friday—good for us, good for you! And that’s good, very good, which is why we should all now say, “Thank God for Good Friday!”

Source Ministries © 2015

Dr. Lewis Gregory .
