GOVERNMENT LEADERSHIP SELECTION

Dr. Lewis Gregory

Selecting government leaders has very serious ramifications. When selecting government leaders to oversee the largest business in the US and the most powerful nation in the world, please keep in mind the following:

It is not a popularity contest!
It is not a beauty contest!
It is not like choosing a favorite movie star!
It is not like choosing a favorite ball team!
It is not about picking a celebrity!
It is not about a candidate’s eloquence in speech!
It is not about who will give you the most benefits!
It is not about your personal preferences!
It is not about your ancestral family loyalties!

What is it? The United States Constitution Article II, Section 1, Clause 8 gives the oath of office for the President of the United States as follows: “I do solemnly swear [or affirm] that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

This means it is imperative that you carefully and prayerfully select the candidate who will best preserve, protect and defend the US Constitution. Therefore, you should select the person who has demonstrated the most appreciation, commitment, and regard for the Constitution. Which candidate most closely believes in, adheres to and supports the standards and values established by the Constitution? In light of the magnitude of the office, you should select the person who is most qualified to oversee the biggest business in the world and manage personnel for the largest employer in the US. This person must understand economics and finances in order to make wise business decisions. It is also essential to pick the person who has the most wisdom and experience to make responsible decisions regarding national and international calamities. The ideal candidate should be a person of proven character, who is a public servant committed to preserving our nation.

Clearly, the selection of a nation’s leaders is vitally important, and that is why the Lord God Almighty instructs us to pray diligently and take the election process very seriously. “Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity.” (1 Timothy 2:2NLT).

Are you looking for the perfect leader? Sorry, you will not find one, at least not in this world. But then you’re not perfect either, for all have sinned, missed the mark of perfection and come short of God’s glorious standard (Romans 3:23). There is only one perfect leader. His name is King Jesus (Hebrews 5:9). He does not require your vote. His Word is settled in Heaven. King David acknowledged this in his prayer to God, “Wealth and honor come from you alone, for you rule over everything. Power and might are in your hand, and at your discretion people are made great and given strength” (1 Chronicles 29:12 NLT).

Yes, God is in control. However, He has given you, as a citizen of the United States, the responsibility of obeying the laws of the land, and that includes your civic duty to vote for those who will lead this great nation. Sometimes it may appear to be a matter of selecting the best of the worst. But at least you are given a choice, which is not the case in many countries.

Voting for our leaders is an amazing privilege and awesome responsibility. So, you should fulfill your civic duty by  prayerfully and carefully voting. Be sure to choose wisely, the future of our nation and the world depends upon it. The wrong leaders can dramatically change a country for the worse. Consider for example: Germany, USSR, China, Cuba, and Venezuela. Therefore, pray that the Lord God Almighty would rule and over rule in the affairs of this nation. God bless the USA!
